Lake Kournas is the only freshwater lake on the entire island, situated in a beautiful valley and surrounded by hills, just a few kilometers away from the sea. This is where the Apokoronas region primarily gets its drinking water. The lake is a paradise for water birds such as ducks, geese, cormorants, and herons, and is also home to the rare bicolored turtle, the diamondback terrapin. Enjoy swimming, pedal boating, or relaxing in one of the numerous tavernas in the area.
